What I do

I manage the Art Slide and Digital collection for the Art Department. The Slide Library is located in 212 Ford. It is used by the art faculty and upper level art students. It is available to others on a limited basis by appointment only. The hours are M,T, W, F 8-5pm and Th 8-1pm.

Other Responsibilities

The slide library has a current size of over 100,000 art slides. Slides, however, are no longer the primary visual teaching tool of art and art history, since we are now digitizing the collection for web review and teaching. Thus far we have over 8000 digital images. Faculty primarily use ARTstor and LUNA Insight (images not found in ARTstor) as image resources.

Background

I have a passion for Africa and its art. Africa keeps emerging in my own art. Ever since I lived and taught art in Liberia in 1965, I have been fascinated by its magic. I teach it, I collect it—it surrounds me daily. Today, the patterns and imagery derived from African fabrics resurface in my work. I explore and translate the African motifs into my own. I often derive my color from the earth tones typically found in African art. Today, I also explore the use of more vibrant electric color.
