Data Sources for Business and Economics

  EMU Subscriptions
Standard & Poor's Research Insight (Compustat) Research Insight can be used to do sophisticated analysis of public company financial data for over 11,000 North American companies. Includes 20 years of annual fundamental data. The data has been adjusted for accounting changes so that times series analysis will make sense. You can screen companies by numerous variables, create reports, and download data to Excel spreadsheets.

Expect to spend some time, since it sometimes takes a while to figure out how to create the reports you want in Research Insight. This database is not easy to use!

Help! Here are some instruction aids developed at different universities:
From Georgetown University: Watch a video demo of using Research Insight. This includes a demo of how to put data into an Excel Spreadsheet. Tip: Use menu at left side to start at Using Research Insight, since the "Where to find ..." section is not relevant to EMU students.

4. Choose Research Insight from the list
5. It may take a minute for the program to load.

ICPSR Direct The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is the largest archive of political and social science research data in the world. ICPSR includes data from every discipline of the social sciences and related fields, including sociology, political science, history, economics, gerontology, demography, public health, criminal justice, education, and international relations.

  Free Sources of Data Sets on the Web
biz/ed Data sets and Data Skills Materials Biz/ed provides data and teaching materials for use with students. There is also a Guide To Free Economics And Business Data On The Web. The guide has a British and European focus.
Davidson Data Center and Network (DDCN) DDCN "is an integrated, fully searchable database on transition and emerging markets. DDCN archives and provides free access to socio-economic micro and macro data on transition economies." DDCN can be used in three ways:
1. To search for data on the web (mostly free data and some commercial sources)
2. To download archived public domain data sets
3. To facilitate dats exchanges between scholars
Energy Information Administration Many types of detailed energy statistics (U.S. and international) on supply, prices, consumption, trade, environment, forecasts and analyses. Includes statistcs for many types of energy including alternative sources. Often historical statistics are included and frequently the statistics can be downloaded in Excel files.
ESDS International "ESDS International provides free web-based access to regularly updated international macro datasets." Includes macro datasets from IMF, OECD, World Bank, Eurostat, IEA, etc. and also micro datasets such as the International Social Survey Programme. You can also link from here to other ESDS data sites, which tend to focus on the UK.
Federal Reserve Economic Data FRED FRED offers over 3000 U.S. economic time series that can be downloaded in Microsoft Excel and text formats. Also, links to ArchivaL Federal Reserve Economic Data (ALFRED).
Medical Expenditure Panel Survey MEPS "The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) is a set of large-scale surveys of families and individuals, their medical providers, and employers across the United States. MEPS is the most complete source of data on the cost and use of health care and health insurance coverage."
National Center for Children in Poverty Research Forum: National Data Sets This page on the Research Forum site describes and links to several data sets from the U.S. government, the Urban Institute, and the Institute for Social Research.
National Longitudinal Surveys U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics "The National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS) are a set of surveys designed to gather information at multiple points in time on the labor market activities and other significant life events of several groups of men and women. For more than 3 decades, NLS data have served as an important tool for economists, sociologists, and other researchers."
NBER Data The National Bureau for Economic Research offers some data associated with NBER studies. Includes macro data, industry data, international trade data, individual data, demographic and vital statistics, patent data, and more.
Panel Study of Income Dynamics PSID "The PSID is a nationally representative longitudinal study of nearly 8,000 U.S. families. Folowing the same families and individuals since 1968, the PSID collects data on economic, health, and social behavior."
Penn World Table "The Penn World Table provides purchasing power parity and national income accounts converted to international prices for 168 countries for some or all of the years 1950-2004." Provided through the Center for International Comparisons at the University of Pennsylvania.
Pew Research Center For The People & The Press Data Archive Raw data from Pew surveys is posted here six months after the survey results are published. Includes archived data back to 1997.
Royal Statistical Society Datasets Website "Datasets and computer code relating to articles published in the four series of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society are made available online here." Datasets start in the late 1990's and continue to the present.
Surveys of Consumers University of Michigan This site by UM's Institute for Social Research provides reports related to several survey projects including:
  • Surveys of Consumers
  • Surveys of Investors
  • Surveys of Affluent Consumers
Site also has current data on the Index of Consumer Sentiment.
You may be asked for your name and email address, but there is no charge for the reports.
As of September 2006, free access was not available to the Survey of Consumers: Regional Data.
Tax Statistics IRS Includes Statistics of Income, business and individual tax statistics, charitable & exempt organization statistics, statistics by IRS form, and more. Tables are available to download in Excel format.
U.S. Census Bureau Data Sets Includes data from the Decennial Census, American Community Survey, Annual Population Estimates, Economic Census, and Annual Economic Surveys.
United Nations Statistical Databases A number of U.N. statistical databases can be accessed for free on this site. Often data can be downloaded. Free sources include data from the Demographic Yearbook System, Joint Oil Data Inititiative, Millennium Indicators Database, National Accounts Main Aggregates Database (time series 1970- ), Social Indicators, population databases, and more. Note additional links to statistical information in the left web page margin.

  Statistics Portals
B&E Datalinks "Links to econ & financial data sources of interest to economists and business statisticians. ... sponsored by the Business and Economics (B&E) Statistics Section of the American Statistical Association (ASA)." Provides a few a hundred links to sources of macroeconomic, microeconomic, labor, finance, and business data. Can be searched by keyword. A difficulty in using this site is that sites are not clearly marked as to whether they are free or subscription based.
Not all of the linked sources are free.
EconData.net Guide to Regional Economic Data on the Web "EconData.Net is designed to help practitioners, researchers, students, and other data users quickly gain access to relevant state and substate socioeconomic data." Categorizes over 750 links to data sources by subject and provider. Subject areas include demographics, employment, occupation, income, output & trade, prices, economic assets, quality of life, industry sectors, and firm listings. Also offers a "free 100-page guide to finding and using economic data to understand your regional economy."
GeoStat Center Statistics and Social Science Data University of Virginia Library The University of Virgina Library provides links and descriptions to many sources of data. Most sources are freely available on the web. Data sources can be browsed by subject, geographic level, format, or source. Subject areas covered include economics, health, politics, socal and behavioral data, demographics, and history.
OAIster OAIster is a search engine for finding content in Open Access repositories (collections of free academic articles, dissertations, theses, datasets, etc.) In Limit by Resource Type use the pull down menu to select dataset and you can use OAIster to search for datasets.
Statistical Resources on the Web University of Michigan Document Center This site provides a detailed subject categorization of statistical web sites, databases, and documents.
When a link is labelled Umich only or Kresge Business Library, you won't be able to access via that link. However, EMU students may be able to access the same resource via the EMU Library databases page
StatSci.org "A portal for statistical science, the discipline of statistics" offers a long list of links to data sets for teaching, as well as other resources on statistics.
  Statistics Reference Sources
Business Statistics of the United States This book compiles statistical data published by numerous government agencies on the U.S. economy, industry, and regional/state data. Available in paper at the library or as an eBook.

Citizens Research Council of Michigan Almanac Almanac links to Michigan statistics on many topics such as population, CPI, gross state product, personal income, employment and unemployment, state government finances, state taxes, local taxes, government programs, agriculture, education, crime, health, transportation, etc.
DataPlace Provides statistics from numerous sources in the following categories: social/demographic, income/employment, housing, mortgage lending, and federal expenditures. You can view statistics and rankings by state, county, metropolitan area, city, zip code, and census tract. Site also allows you to view maps and scatterplots.
FRASER "On this web site you will find links to scanned images (in Adobe® Acrobat® PDF format) of historical economic statistical publications, releases, and documents." These electronic versions of U.S. government statistical publications on banking, monetary, economic and business topics are provided free of charge by the Federal Reserve of St. Louis. See FRED (link above) for data that can be easily downloaded. The documents in FRASER may have additional statistics that could be added to data series by FRED.
Macroeconomic Time Series Data Source Locator University of Chicago Library This locator was developed to help students at the University of Chicago identify possible sources of macroeconomic time series data. Enter the year you want the series to start, geographic area, and data category and the Locator will give you a list of possible sources. Although some of the sources will be subscription services that EMU doesn't have (such as Datastream or Global Market Information Database), many of the recommended sources are free on the web or are paper sources that are at the EMU Library.
MeasuringWorth.com Designed by two Economics profesors, this site offers calculators and data sets related to measures of worth over long time periods. Measures include annualized growth rates of CPI, GDP, and the price of gold; relative value of the U.S. dollar (or British pound) comparing to retail price index, GDP deflator, average earnings, per capita GDP, or GDP; and comparisons of purchasing power, inflation rate, and Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Secrets of Economic Indicators This book provides excellent explanations of many U.S. and international economic indicators, including why each indicator is important, how it is computed, and sources of the statistics.

  Other Ways to Get Data for Research Projects
Michigan Census Research Data Center (MCRDC) This is for advanced research. Researchers may submit proposals to use confidential U.S. Census microdata for research (also some data from other federal agencies). Approved researchers can then access data at a center in Ann Arbor.
Project must be approved. There is a fee to use the center.
