  Public Company Financials
Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage NetAdvantage contains the electronic equivalent of many S&P publications. Covers only companies traded on U.S. stock exchanges. Searching the Company Profile gives you information on current stock and index quotes (delayed 20 minutes), stock price charts, and key financial data including ratios, Beta, market cap, dividend rate, dividend and stock split data, standings in relation to indexes, revenues, earnings per share, balance sheet numbers,and more.
Tip: Use links on the left to find additional information. Much data is in the Corporation Records, including capitalization, list of subsidiaries, capital expenditures, R&D expenditures, bond descriptions, dividends, etc. Stock Reports have Beta, S&P Credit Rating, % institutional ownership, ratios, analyst recommendations, etc.

EDGAR All companies traded on U.S. stock exchanges must file various reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC makes these reports available via EDGAR. This includes the 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, proxy, registration, and other forms (but often not the Annual Report to Shareholders). You can also search the full text of filings from the past four years.
Tip: If you want to search the full text, be sure to read the FAQ which tells you about search techniques that will make a big difference in your results.
Quote.com (formerly MarketCenter) If you want stock charts, Quote.com may be the site for you. In addition to current quotes and recent news on a stock, Quote.com provides advanced charts. Users can customize charts with comparisons to indexes or with numerous technical analysis studies. The site also has good coverage of international financial markets, options, exchange traded funds, futures, and Forex cross rates.
Large amount of free information available without having to register. Some advanced features available only with subscription, such as real time streaming quotes and portfolio features.
Reuter's Investor Initial stock overview offers a more detailed profile than most free sources, current quote and trading statistics, links to news stories, officers with brief bio's and compensation, share data and price performance over various time periods, 5 year historical price and P/E statistics, detailed insider trading information with names and number of stocks traded, statistics on institutional holdings, shares shorted, option quotes, charts, a large number of key ratios, historical growth rates/revenues/EPS, quarterly financial statements (balance, income, cash flow), performance comparisons and rankings, risk analysis, consensus estimates, and recommendations.
Free, except for analyst reports. Some info provided without registration, more with registration.
SEC Info - alternative search for EDGAR SEC filings This site allows you to search for EDGAR SEC filings and SEDAR filings (Canadian Securities Administrators - CSA). Benefits are some different ways to do keyword searches, ability to browse recent filings, and a nicer looking display of documents. The popularity of this site means that it can sometimes be a little slow.
Limited amount of free searching. Active users must purchase a subscription.
Yahoo! Finance Information on individual stocks, bonds, and mutual funds as well as overall markets. A good source for getting historical prices. Most information is free, but you have to endure many annoying advertisements.

Value Line Investment Survey Value Line gives financial information for 1,700 public companies. Value Line has detailed financial charts and statistics, stock rankings, analysis, and projections. Value Line is a source for company betas. EMU has only the current version of Value Line. The Kresge Library at the University of Michigan has old versions of Value Line on microfiche.

Use tips:
A company index – kept in the front of the Ratings & Reports volume – gives the page numbers for company reports in the Ratings & Reports volume (in bold at left of stock name) and the Selection & Opinion volume (in italics at left of stock name). A 2nd volume, the Ratings & Reports Expanded Edition (now called the Small and Mid-Cap Edition) offers reports for an additional 1700 stocks.

Form 4 Oracle This site can be used to look at insider trading activity that is reported in SEC filings. You can search a company and get lists of reported trades by insiders. There are also articles on insider trading and links to related resources.
Basic search is free on site. Real-time reports and advanced features available with subscriptions.
  Bonds -- Corporate
Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage In NetAdvantage you can find Bond Reports for specific companies, bond market news in Credit Week Focus, and a tool for screening bonds by numerous criteria. Bond Reports include CUSIP, S&P rating and ratings history, price data, yield to maturity, basis points, issuer profile, and more.

Tip:
To find a report for a company, click on the Companies tab then in the center column change Select Publication to Bond Reports. The link for Bond Screener is in the left margin of Companies pages.

Fitch Ratings Free registration at the Fitch Ratings site will get you access to brief information on bonds with the Fitch Ratings. Use tabs to navigate to sections on different types of bonds: corporates, global power, project finance, high yield, banks, REITs, insurance, covered bond, structured finance offerings, and more.
Free registration will get you access to ratings and brief information. The initial press release and research are not free.
Investing in Bonds.com Bond Market Association This site is a great free "source of bond price information and includes a wide variety of market data, news, commentary and information about bonds." Covers the corporate bond market, mortgage securities market, and asset-backed securities. Information on individual corporate bonds includes ratings, trading history, graphs, and calculators to test different bond transaction scenarios.
  Bonds -- Government
Investing in Bonds.com Bond Market Association This site is a great free "source of bond price information and includes a wide variety of market data, news, commentary and information about bonds." Both municipal bonds and U.S. government bonds are covered. Information on individual municipal bonds includes ratings, trading history, calculators to test different bond transaction scenarios, and sometimes full text of the Official Statement.
Treasury Direct U.S. Dept. of Treasury Information on Treasury Bills, Notes, Bonds,TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities), Savings Bonds, and more. This link takes you to a search page for finding historical data on treasury securities. There are other statistics on the site--You may have to "poke around" the site to find the information you want.
Yahoo! Finance Bond Center Yahoo Finance has information on Treasury, Treasury Zero Coupon, Corporate and Municipal bonds. Search by bond name or use the bond screener to find bonds by type, state, price, or other criteria.
  Mutual Funds
Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage NetAdvantage provides reports on specific mutual funds, lists of top performing funds, funds newsletters, and a fund screener that can sort funds by numerous criteria. Mutual Fund Reports include recent quotes, S&P rankings, detailed financial statistics and risk numbers, charts, news, data on fund composition, and a performance review covering investment objectives, market and peer comparisons.

Morningstar Mutual Funds Mornigstar provides ratings, analysis, and financial statistics for individual mutual stocks. This biweekly publication provides mutual fund reports on a rotating cycle (every fund covered once every 10 weeks).

Use tip:
An issue in the front pocket of the binder provides news followed by an index to fund reports. Look up the fund name to get the page number for the report in the binder.

Mutual Fund Investment Center This site has information on specific mutual funds, including snapshots from Morningstar. (These snapshots don't have all of the information from a full Morningstar report, such as the written commentary.) You can also search for funds by various criteria. Site is provided by the Mutual Fund Education Alliance, a trade association for the mutual fund industry. Also has some good educational material on mutual fund investing.
Ameritrade - Mutual Funds and ETF's The Ameritrade site provides free access to abbreviated Morningstar Mutual Fund profiles. These have some of the data found in a full Morningstar Report, but not all of the information is included such as the written commentary.
Morningstar If you register for a 14-day free trial at the Morningstar web site, you can get quite a lot of free information on a fund including Morningstar ratings, quotes and other performance statistics, a portfolio analysis, recent news, performance history, tax analysis, risk measures (including betas), management biographies, fees & expenses, minimum investments, and purchase info. Click on Data Interpreter for more text explaining the snapshot data. Funds are listed by fund families, fund types, top performing funds, and other categories. Free tools include a fund screener, fund quickrank, and fund compare tool.
Most information requires a subscription, but you can get a 14-day free trial.
EDGAR Search: Mutual Fund Prospectuses Lengthy regulatory documents filed with the SEC. Search is by mutual fund company. A document may sometimes cover more than one fund offered by the company.
TIP: In some cases, it may be easier to find the prospectus on the mutual fund company's web site.
Factiva Quotes Search If you know the ticker for your fund, you can retrieve current daily quotes and historical quotes in Factiva. Click Companies/Markets tab, then change Select Instrument: to Funds.

FundLink on Brill.com This site provides a long alphabetical list of links to mutual fund company sites.
Lipper Research Center via Reuters Free fund overview which includes performance statistics, Lipper Ratings, expense statistics, portfolio allocation information, and more. Also available are Lipper Daily Indices and a screener. Note the ETFs link to the left that leads to information on Exchange-Traded Funds.
Overview is free. Research Reports linked to from bottom are not free. Registration required for some parts of Reuters site.

Click on the small icons to the left of the symbol to view charts, additional data, or options. The advanced chart allows the user to customize displays and add technical analysis. Morningstar The Morningstar site offers snapshots of ETF's with data similar to that provided in it's mutual fund snapshots including Morningstar ratings. There is also an ETF screener.
Much is information available with free registration. Access to full analyst reports and other premium content requires a subscription. Links to premium content are marked with a + sign.
Note: ETF's are treated as stocks in some services and as funds in others. In Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage search for ETFs by ticker symbol in the Company section. In the Lipper Research Center (Mutual Funds section above) ETF's can be found via the Fund Screener.
  Options
Quote.com Stock Option Homepage formerly MarketCenter Search by stock ticker symbol (there is a symbol look up on the site) to get data on options for a stock. Data display can be customized. Site also has commentary on options market, a yearly options expiration calendar, an extensive options glossary, and several educational brochures on options trading.

  Commodities and Futures
Commodity Charts & Quotes Site offers free commodity charts and intraday commodity quotes.
CRB Commodity Yearbook Entries for each commodity (aluminum to currencies to milk to zinc) include an overview of the commodity with history, where it is traded, prices, supply, demand, and trade information. This is followed by statistical tables covering topics such as production, consumption, prices, import/export, stocks, trading volume, open interest, spread, recycling, or other relevant statistics. Also, general market trends and commodity indexes.

FAOSTAT UN Food and Agricultural Organization FAOSTAT offers detailed international time series data on agricultural, forestry, and fishery commodities. Includes statistics on production, production indices, trade, trade indices, commodity balances, food supply, food balances, producer prices, exports of cereals, and more. Statistics can be displayed in dynamic tables or downloaded.
Monthly Energy Review "The Monthly Energy Review (MER) is the Energy Information Administration’s primary report of recent energy statistics. Included are total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; and data unit conversions."
PS&D Online USDA The Foreign Agricultural Service's Production, Supply and Distribution (PS&D) online database "contains current and historical official USDA data on production, supply and distribution of agricultural commodities for the United States and key producing and consuming countries. Users may select from a menu of pre-defined tables categorized by commodity or commodity group (see Pre-defined Tables) or create custom queries for specific commodities, attributes and/or countries (see Custom Query tab)." Datafiles can be displayed or downloaded.

  American Depositary Receipts
adr.com Barron's calls adr.com "the premier site for learning about American depositary receipts." You can search for ADR's by multiple criteria such as exchange, region or country, industry sector, or depositary--as well as by individual identifiers such as company name, ticker, CUSIP, or UND SEDOL. The site has basic sercurity details for ADR's and often a link to the company web site. Some ADR's have fuller profiles at the site which may include market data and charts, top shareholders (institutional and mutual fund), performance ratios from FirstCall, and a brief company description. You can also view a profile of the underlying stock. Links at the top of the profile lead to additional information including newswires, estimates, financials, charts, historical events, and links to company annual reports on the web.
You must agree to a disclaimer when you enter the site. Information is free. Site can be a little slow--most likely due to heavy site usage.
  Banking
Credit Union National Association CUNA The CUNA site offers information of interest to credit unions including current legislative, regulatory and government issues; compliance information; and statistics on credit unions, economic conditions, bankruptcies, etc.
Some parts of the site can be accessed only by CUNA members.
FDIC Institution Directory This directory provides access to information and reports on individual banks, including location of offices, web site, historical profile, summary of deposits, Community Reinvestment Act ratings, financial and performance reports, etc. Also, allows you to create reports comparing institutions. The Find an Institution search allows you to search for banks by numerous criteria.
FDIC Reports of Condition and Income and Thrift Financial Reports "A searchable database of public financial data for all FDIC insured institutions which is required to be filed quarterly." Data comes from Call reports filed with the FDIC and Thrift Financial Reports (TFRs) filed with the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS). Provides detailed financial data and often a link to the bank web site. Can be searched by name or you can search by city and state to get a list of institutions.
TIP: Search and Download buttons are hard to find. Look in the upper left for them.
National Information Center (NIC) "The National Information Center (NIC) provides comprehensive information on banks and other institutions for which the Federal Reserve has a supervisory, regulatory, or research interest including both domestic and foreign banking organizations operating in the U.S."
  Mergers & Aquisitions
M&A Databank CNN Money This limited free resources offers:
1. Details on very recent deals
(see full m&a databank to look back a day or two)
2. A list of the year's top deals.

Free full reports give transaction details. Unfortunately, you can't get information on older deals here. Details on older deals are available at the libray using our print subscription to Mergers & Acquisitions. The library has electronic database access to articles from the periodical Mergers & Acquisitions, but the deal reports are not included in the databases.

  Financial Market News
Bloomberg Access breaking financial news on the Bloomberg site via articles, Bloomberg TV, Bloomberg Radio, podcasts, and other features.
Factiva Factiva includes multiple WSJ editions: Asian, Eastern, Europe, Americas (in Spanish). Also Barron's, numerous financial newsletters, and newswires (including Dow Jones and Reuters). There are also thousands of other newspapers and periodicals.

Tips: To read todays' WSJ, NYT, and other leading news sources--choose News Pages in the green bar at top of page.

  Statistics
BBA LIBOR British Bankers Association This site has current and historic LIBOR rates and REPO rates. "BBA LIBOR is the most widely used benchmark or reference rate for short term interest rates world-wide."
You must agree to terms and conditions to access rates. Rates are provided in Excel format.
Currency Trading Resources The OANDA FX Trade site has currency exchange rates (including historical rates) and FXTrade Statistical Information.
Note: For exchanges related to the U.S. dollar you may want to use the Federal Reserve site. This site is useful when you want to compare other currencies.
Economic Report of the President The Economic Report of the President offers many statistical tables with long runs of yearly data. These include statistics related to GDP and other national income statistics; population, employment, wages, and productivity; production and business activity; consumer and producer price indexes; money stock, credit, and finance; government finance; corporate profits and stock market indices; international trade and exchange rates; and more.
This web site presents the numbers in Excel format.
Federal Reserve Board Releases and Historical Data Statistics from the Federal Reserve including: principal economic indicators, bank data, business finance, exchange rates, flow of funds accounts, household finance, industrial activity, interest rates, money stock and reserve balances.
Global Stock Markets Factbook 2005 "The Factbook provides details of the performance and characteristics of world stock markets for the last ten years as measured by S&P/Citigroup Global Equity Indices, S&P Emerging Markets Database (EMDB), and local stock market indices." Statistics describe overall markets in both the developed and developing world. There are detailed market profiles for 79 countries.

ICI Research and Statistics The Investment Company Institute (ICI) provides statistics on the mutual fund industry, including statistics on mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds, and unit investment trust sponsors. Also statistics on various investment markets (retirement, education savings, institutional, and worldwide markets). Site offers full text of the Investment Company Factbook.
Industry Ratios This section of the Industry Research guide describes the industry ratio sources available at EMU Library.
Investment Statistics Locator Karen Chapman This reference book at the EMU Library is especially helpful when you are looking for older statistics. Written in 1988, it indexes statistics found in paper reference sources. Since some of those sources now have online equivalents, it can help direct you to current online sources too.

Standard & Poor's Statistical Service This publication provides historical statistics on stock indices, including these statistics by sub industry. Also, historical data on bank assets, interest rates, money stock measures, GDP, payrolls, cost of living indexes, etc. Unfortunately, this is not available electronically via NetAdvantage.

Stocks, Bonds, Bills, and Inflation Yearbook (SBBI) Ibbotson Associates This yearly reference work by Ibbotson Associates provides historical data and indices on capital market returns from 1926 to the present,including graphs and charts on stock returns, government bonds, corporate bonds, treasury bills, REITs, inflation, capital appreciation, etc. Data is on overall markets not individual issues. Data is given on annual and monthly basis. The book also provides information on how to manipulate historical data such as the Monte Carlo Method.

Treasury Bulletin U.S. Department of the Treasury "Contains a mix of narrative, tables, and charts related to:

Wilshire Indexes In addition to information on how the indexes are constructed, the site has an Index Return Calculator that "allows you to obtain returns data for any combination of Wilshire indexes." It can take a little bit of "playing around" with the calculator to figure out how to get the data you want. Data can be downloaded in spreadsheet format. Note that these indexes are now often referred to as Dow Jones Wilshire indexes.
  Professional Associations and Certification Programs
CFA Institute "CFA Institute is an international, nonprofit organization of more than 70,000 investment practitioners and educators in over 100 countries. CFA Institute administers the CFA Examination." Site has professional ethics standards, professional development opportunities, policy statements, Research Foundation publications, and career resources (members only). CFA Exam materials include sample exams and study guides.
Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards The CFP Board "is a professional regulatory organization based in the United States of America that fosters professional standards in personal financial planning so that the public has access to and benefits from competent and ethical financial planning." At the site you can learn about financial planning and CFP certification; search for a certified financial planner; or report a complaint about a CFP.
