  Books on SCM
Books in the EMU Library Catalog are labeled with Library of Congress Subject headings. There is no LC Subject heading for "supply chain management". The closest LC Subject is "Business Logistics." Below are useful LC Subjects for SCM. Click on the LC Subjects to perform a search in the catalog. Note that you can also try keyword searches of topics such as "outsourcing" or "supply chain," since these words may be in the book or chapter titles.

Going Backwards: Reverse Logistics Trends and Practices D. Rogers, R. Tibben-Lembke Two professors at the University of Nevada Reno have put the entire book on the web. "The purpose of this book is twofold: to present an overview and introduction to reverse logistics, and to provide insights on how to manage reverse logistics well."

Sales Management: Teamwork, Leadership, and Technology Charles M. Futrell This textbook is authored by a Marketing Professor at Texas A&M University. The book has chapters on planning, staffing, training, and managing sales teams, and on social/ethical/legal responsibilities. There are also case studies, exercises, Power Point slides, chapter outlines, and sample exam questions.

Warehouse & Distribution Science J. Bartholdi and S. Hackman This textbook is written by a professors at the Georgia Institute of Technology (a leading SCM program). The book focuses on "developing methodology to optimize warehouse operations." Sections of the book include: 1. Warehouse issues, equipment, processes, 2. Layout, 3. Order picking, 4. Special topics (crossdocking), 5. Measuring warehouse efficiency, 6. Miscellaneous (warehousing around the world). The book is in process and new sections may be added.

Air Transport World (ATW) A monthly trade publication for the airline industry. "Topics covered in ATW include airline operations, airline management issues, information technology, safety & security, alliances, distribution, transport aircraft and engine programs, MRO, aero politics, regulation, finance and leasing, airport development and air cargo. Each year, ATW publishes as part of its July issue the World Airline Report, providing detailed fleet, financial and traffic information on more than 500 airlines as well as an overview of the key events and trends of the 12 months." American Shipper EMU doesn't have a subscription to American Shipper: Journal of International Logistics but the web site offers free newswires. Current newswires can be browsed by many categories such as various types of shippers, intermediaries or carriers; customs and other government entities; and regional or international news.
Other parts of site may require a subscription.
Automotive Logistics This trade periodical publishes articles on "the strategy, management and movement of components, finished automobiles and service parts, from factory floor to dealer forecourt and everything in between."

Incoterms International Chamber of Commerce "Incoterms are standard trade definitions most commonly used in international sales contracts." This site has information about Incoterms, but not the entire text of the terms. It does have text of the preamble to each term. "The Preambles explain the areas the terms cover but do not spell out the obligations of buyer and seller." The full text is available in paper at the library (see below).

Manufacturing 2007 Executive Summary This report is based on an extensive survey of manufacturing plants sponsored by IndustryWeek and the Manufacturing Performance Institute. The report includes benchmarks and statistics related to plants, human resources, operations, productivity, supply chain, capacity, equipment, information technology, manufacturing issues, and quality measures. These are overall statistics; there is no information on individual companies.

ISM Principles Of Social Responsibility The Institute for Supply Management has produced a set of professional ethics with an accompanying Supply Management Audit For Social Responsibility Principles. These can be dowloaded from the site. There are also research reports, articles, and links to other resources.
  Case Studies
CAPS Research Publications Cases are included in the Critical Issues Reports, PRACTIX cases, and Focus Studies at this site. You must register to access full reports.
Free registration required to access these cases. other parts of the site may be available only to sponsoring companies.
Educational Case Studies CSCMP These case studies were presented at an educator's conference of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
Purchasing magazine Medal of Professional Excellence This annual award is given to "role models for best practices in activities ranging from strategic sourcing to supplier selection and management, global sourcing, strategic planning and risk management, among other critical purchasing functions." Articles on the site describe the winners' SCM innovations.

YourTechTV This site by the publisher of the European trade periodical Manufacturing and Logistics IT offers video case studies on topics such as RFID and pharmaceutical supply chain efficiency. Beyond the video case studies, there are other videos on topics such as barcode scanning, handheld comuters, and warehouse management. Quality of the videos may vary.
  Research Centers
CAPS Research ASU and ISCM CAPS stands for Center for Advanced Purchasing Studies. "CAPS’ research is aimed at executives with strategic responsibilities for the supply/sourcing/procurement effort." Many documents are available at the site including benchmarking reports, best practices, critical issues reports, e-commerce papers, and focus studies (lengthy indepth research reports). Topics include supply chains within specific industries, outsourcing, Japanese Keiretsu, e-procurement, reverse auctions, performance measurement, international comparisons,ethical issues, etc.
Free registration required to access reports.
Center for Leadership of the Digital Enterprise MSU The Center for Leadership of the Digital Enterprise (CLODE) at MSU's Broad School of Management focuses on digitized supply chains and IT management among other topics. Site has only limited description of the center; no research reports. There are a few supply chain research reports on the School's site.
Center for Supply Chain Research Penn State University The Center researches many supply chain topics and facilitates benchmarking consortiums "that study Import, Customer Service, Sales and Operations Planning, and Transportation processes related to the field of logistics and supply chain management." Site has a list of working papers that can be purchased.
Fulltext working papers must be ordered. Cost is not high.
Center for Value Chain Research Lehigh University "The center’s research focuses primarily on Value Chain Planning and Development activities, which connects corporate strategy with Value Chain Execution systems." Short white papers are available at the site.
Global Supply Chain Management Forum - Stanford Stanford's Global Supply Chain Management Forum "advances the theory and practice of excellence in global supply chain management." The site includes podcasts and papers from the annual Responsible Supply Chains Conferences. Most other research on the site is available only to members.
Much of the content is available only to members.
Integrated Value Chain Forums University of Tennessee The forums include these "strategic think tanks": (1) Supply Chain Strategy & Management Forum and (2) Sales Forecasting Management Forum. The most useful part of the site is the library of Prof. Tom Mentzer's materials which includes articles, white papers, and presentation slides on supply chain topics. Another library on the site offers more recent writings by Mentzer and other faculty.
MIT Center for eBusiness The Center supports research on topics such as: "Digital Productivity", "IT Services and Supply Chain Management", "Communications Futures", "Digital Marketing Strategy" and "Interdependence of Security and the Extended Enterprise ("I-SEE")." More than 200 Research Briefs and working papers are available on the site.
MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics The Center offers education, research and outreach programs related to logistics and supply chain management, including logistics modeling, demand management, humanitarian logistics, international logistics, supply chain security, and management of transportation systems. The research section of the site is especially useful as it often includes links to full articles and reports.
Service Supply Chain Thought Leaders Forum Wharton, University of Pennsylvania "The Service Supply Chain Thought Leaders Forum is an industry/academic conference co-sponsored by Wharton's Fishman-Davidson Center at the University of Pennsylvania. The Thought Leaders Forum brings together a select group of senior executives from diverse industries, government officials, and academic researchers to share ideas on the strategic challenges and competitive opportunities of service supply chain management." The site offers presentation slides and research reports from recent and past forums. Forums have covered service supply chain topics related to the aerospace and defense industry, service outsourcing, performance incentives, technology developments, and "service centric" strategies.
Supply Chain & Logistics Institute Georgia Tech The institute site links to a number of research centers on various supply chain topics. Materials at the site vary from center to center, but can include white papers, presentations, and course materials.
Supply Chain Management Research Group Ohio State Conducts "business research in the area of Supply Chain Management." Articles and presentations are available at the site.
Note: You may not be able to access some articles due to web site technical problems.
Transportation and Logistics Research Center University of Wisconsin - Superior The purpose of the center "is to provide applied transportation and logistics research, education and advisory services that advance the economy of the region." The region includes Michigan's upper penninsula as well as well as northern Wisconsin and the Duluth, Minn. area. Site offers full text of lengthy reports produced for grant projects related to regional rail transport and the Twin Ports Intermodal Freight Terminal.
  Organizations
American Society of Transportation & Logistics AST&L "AST&L's mission is to facilitate education and certification in the fields of transportation, logistics, and supply chain management." Site has information on the CTL (Certified in Transportation and Logistics).
APICS APICS is a professional organization for individuals working in operations management, "including production, inventory, supply chain, materials management, purchasing, and logistics." Site has information on various certification programs such as the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP). Also offered are white papers, industry news, a buyer's guide, and information on educational opportunities. Additional information is available to APICS members, such as best practices, the APICS Dictionary, and a database of enterprise software reviews.
Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals CSCMP A professional association for SCM professionals (formerly known as the Council of Logistics Management CLM). Site offers information on membership, conferences and other educational opportunities, case studies, and a career center.

Institute for Supply Management ISM ISM is an association for supply management professionals. It was formerly called the National Association of Purchasing Management. Site offers information on membership, conferences and other educational opportunities, certification programs, social responsibility principles, and publications. Of special note are results from ISM surveys such as the Report of Business and the PMI index. Some information such as the ISM Resource Guides, career database, and sample bid-specification documents are free only to ISM members.
Production and Operations Management Society "Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) is an international professional organization representing the interests of POM professionals from around the world."
Supply Chain Council Although much of the information on the Supply Chain Council site is available only to members, some useful information is available to all such as an overview booklet for the Supply-Chain Operations Reference-model (SCOR). SCOR "is a process reference model that has been developed and endorsed by the Supply-Chain Council as the cross-industry standard diagnostic tool for supply-chain management."

American Trucking Associations This industry association represents companies in the trucking industry. It's main purpose is to monitor legislation related to transportation issues.
ICC's Commission on Transport and Logistics Part of the International Chamber of Commerce, the commission's mission is "to promote intermodal transport and competitive, efficient transport services worldwide." Site offers news and ICC policy positions on intermodal, maritime, and air transport issues.
International Association of Ports and Harbors IAPH IAPH's "principle objective is to develop and foster good relations and cooperation among all ports and harbors in the world by providing a forum to exchange opinions and share experiences on the latest trends of port management and operations." Useful features at the site include profiles of member ports, issue papers, statistics, and a long list of industry links.
National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors NAW NAW "is the Washington, DC-based trade association that represents the wholesale distribution industry." They produce numerous research reports on the industry, but very little information is provided free on the web site.
The International Air Cargo Association TIACA This industry association represents companies in the air cargo industry. Site offers industry forecasts and news.
VICS Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions Association VICS is an industry association of companies that work together to develop voluntary cross-industry commerce standards.
