Advertising agencies include advertising agencies, house agencies, media buying services, sales promotion agencies, and public relations firms. Entries on these offer information on specializations, billings, media types, key personnel, and major accounts held.
Information on advertisers may include the company's total advertising expenditures, expenditures by media type, types of media used, whether they distribute nationally or internationally, brands, advertising agencies used, a list of competitors, and names of key company personnel.

The most useful tool on the site is being able to search company names and retrieve news stories on sponsorship activities. You must register on site to access some content (requires cookie and you may get email).

EMU doesn't have a subscription to the fee-based parts of this Web site, but there is useful free information. Latest News gives information, forecasts, and statistics on advertising. News & Resources includes commercials that can be viewed online and reports on the advertising industry. TNS statistics are also often quoted in business periodicals, such as Advertising Age or Brandweek.

The advertising industry relies on Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS) for details on advertising outlets. There are different SRDS sources for various forms of print and broadcast media, as well as for sources of direct marketing lists. Because of high cost, the library subscribes to up-to-date online versions of three of the SRDS titles: Business Publication Advertising Source business classification list - video tutorial Consumer Magazine Advertising Source consumer classification list - video tutorial Newspaper Advertising Source. User Guide (PDF) SRDS publications are more complicated to use then most library sources. The video tutorials, classification lists, or guide for each source may help.

The Arbitron site offers many free studies of media audiences for radio, cable TV, internet, and online radio. These include studies of multi-cultural audiences. There are also studies on "out-of-home" media such as cinema advertising, outdoor advertising, airport advertising, and "in-car" media. The site also offers profiles of radio stations, ratings of stations, and rankings of radio markets.
Although some parts of the site can only be accessed by Arbitron clients, there are many free reports.

Audit Bureau of Circulations Reader Profiles |

Some free Reader Profile reports are listed by state. These provide statistics on readers of specific newspapers including number of readers, reach, average frequency, gross rating points (GRP), a map of the circulation area, and a detailed reader demographic analysis. Go to ABC's eCirc to "sort and search summarized circulation data by Publication Title, State/Province, U.S. SRDS or Canadian CARD classifications."

This site is handy for finding links to media web sites, especially for newspapers, radio, and TV. You can find links by state to major newpapers, radio stations, and TV stations. Also, links to newspaper sites by country and some links to magazine sites.

"Nielsen Media Research tracks the television and media-viewing habits of homes across the country." The site offers weekly rankings of the top ten broadcast TV shows, cable TV shows, and syndicated TV programs, as well as the top 10 shows among African Americans and Hispanics. Most of the site is devoted to describing the many reports and services available to clients. Students may find the glossary of media terms/acronyms and the info on stats/calculations used by Nielsen's useful in understanding media reports of Nielsen ratings. The library has some older sample Nielsen reports. Selected Nielsen statistics are shared with the media and can be found by searching for articles in Business Periodicals or Newspapers.

Nielsen NetRatings sells "Internet and digital media measurement and analysis," including online advertising research, internet market research, and internet audience measurement. Some free information is available in the "Resources" section which offers web usage data for a number of countries and some other global stats and rankings, such as "top site genres," "web pages per person per month" or "time spent during a surfing session." Additional free information may be found in the "Press" section of the web site. Only small amount of information is free at the site.
