  Key Sources for International Marketing
BuyUSA.gov This site by the U.S. Commercial Service has export information by country, including information on trade events, regulations, market research, and more. Information varies from country to country. If the country of interest has a Country Commercial Guide at the site, you may find that especially useful.
Exporter’s Encyclopedia The Exporter’s Encyclopedia provides current “how to” information for exporters, including specific detail on numerous issues such as international trade documents, regulations, insurance, shipping, communications, government assistance, and international trade organizations. The Export Markets section offers extensive detail for individual countries. Since the United States is included in the Exports Markets section, it can also be useful for importers. Worth a trip to the library!

GlobalEdge: International Business Resource Desk Useful internet sites for international business topics are selected and organized at this site. Besides country information, it includes sites for statistical information, international news, trade information, international finance, cultural issues, and other international business research topics. Export.gov This site by the U.S. government has market research, trade leads, and information on how to export.
To access some parts of the site, such as Market Research, you must register for an account which is free for students.
FDI.net World Bank Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency "FDI.net is a unique web portal that offers free, on-demand country analysis and information on all things related to foreign direct investment in 175 countries. The site combines business and public resources with World Bank Group analysis to provide users with a single entry point for the full-spectrum of information needed to make a decision about investing in a foreign country."
FITA Global Trade Portal The Federation of International Trade Associations pulls together information from many sources on this site. There are extensive country profiles (use links to get all the info), trade leads, trade events, and links to many sources of information on international trade.
Globus & NTDB This site has reports provided by the U.S. Commerce Dept. to help companies export. Especially useful are the International Market Insight (IMI) Reports. Unfortunately, the site may try your patience as it is rather difficult to navigate and search.


  Country Information
CIA World Factbook Country profiles include information and statistics on the country's geography, population, government, economy, communications, transportation, militiary, and relations with other countries. Includes many small countries that may not be covered by other sources.
Economist Country Briefings Concise country profiles include very up-to-date economic indicators. The Briefings also include links to recent articles about the country from The Economist, an important news source for international business.
Some links go to "premium content" or to purchase options for Economist Intelligence Unit publications. Articles from The Economist might be available via EMU Library databases.
EIU ViewsWire via ABI/Inform Up-to-date reports from the Economist Intelligence Unit provide insight on country developments such as economic trends and forecasts, country risk, business environment, currency and interest rate forecasts, finance outlooks, industry conditions, political developments, and regulations.

Euromonitor's Country Factfiles The Country Factfiles linked from this site provide some interesting free marketing related statistics for countries including: GDP measured at purchasing power parity, consumer expenditure, annual disposable income, and more. Lifestyle indicators are also included such as: consumer expenditure on food, Internet users, new registrations of passenger cars, consumer electronics, and pet food. Market size figures are given for soft drinks, tobacco, cosmetics & toiletries, and tourism. There are also links to web sites with business/economic information for each country.

Oxford Economic Country Briefings Oxford Economic Country Briefings provide GDP figures, key economic indicators, and economic forecasts for many countries.

Deloitte International Tax and Business Guides This site provides tax and regulatory information on many countries. Each country has a "Highlights" document that offers brief information. For many larger countries you can download a Guide that offers more extensive information.
Use the pull-down Jurisdiction selector at the bottom of the page to choose the country you want info on.
Background Notes This source by the U.S. Department of State provides quick statistics and information on a country's economy, geography, people, history, government, U.S. relations, and more. Includes reports for small countries that may not be covered elsewhere.
Country Studies Each Study presents a book length survey of the country, including chapters on history, geography and population, social systems, education and culture, economy, agriculture, industry, transportation and trade, science and technology, government, political process, foreign relations, criminal justice and security, and national defense. As the Studies are not updated every year, this site also offers country profiles that are updated more frequently.

Doing Business: Comparing Business Regulations World Bank Reports are available on a large number of countries. A report will rank the country's regulations compared to other countries and provide details on regulations related to starting a business, getting credit, licenses, employing workers, investments, taxes, trade, contracts, bankruptcy, etc.
Doing ebusiness in ... Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) reports on ebusiness readiness by country.
Ernst & Young International Searching the Ernst & Young online library for a particular country can lead to very interesting reports. Available information will vary by country and not all publications are in English. You might find a book-length report like Doing Business in Bulgaria that can be downloaded in PDF.
Exporter’s Encyclopedia: Export Markets Section The Exporter’s Encyclopedia is especially strong in coverage for each country of regulatory information relating to mailings, importing, tariffs, customs, taxes, documentation, marketing, consumer protection, standards, intellectual property, transportation, and more. There are also country overviews, information on business customs, key contacts, and travel information. This source covers many small countries that may not be included in other sources.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada You may find some useful information on a country's economic background, sources of project financing, or import regulations on this Canadian government site. Unfortunately, the market reports by industry are for Canadians only.

Sources include the BBC’s Country Profiles, and the U.S. Commerce Department’s Country Commercial Guides. IMF Reports by Country Lists reports by the International Monetary Fund relating to specific countries. Some of these may be economic reports that are more technical than you might want.
KPMG International The international accounting firm KPMG provides a large number of full text reports on investing in or doing business in specific countries. These are published on various sites for KPMG offices in various countries. You can use the "Site Selector" link from the main KPMG site (top right) to go to the site for a specific country--most KPMG country sites have some publications in English, often titled "Investment in [county name]." Alternatively do a Google search like this: KPMG "investment in china"
Lex Mundi Guides to Doing Business Legal guides written by law firms that cover business regulations in various countries, states, and provinces.
Michigan District Export Council Statistics on Michigan exports to various countries. Trade Guides to various countries with links to additional sites.
Portals to the World Library of Congress The Library of Congress provides links by country to sources of information on business, economy, culture, education, government, health, media, etc.

Global Etiquette Guides These guides give 10-20 pages of information for most countries, including descriptions of "Fundamental Cultural Orientations," such as ways to relate interpersonally, view time, deal with risk, and work with society at large. Specifics are given for greetings, communication styles, gestures, dress, situational protocols, dining and drinking, gifts, and business culture.

Country Insights Centre for Intercultural Learning (Canadian site) Cultural information is offered for numerous countries. Some countries have an extensive intercultural issues section, which may cover issues such as communication styles, display of emotion, preferred managerial qualities, hierarchy and decision-making, relationship-building, privileges and favouritism, conflicts in the workplace, dress, punctuality and formality, and more. Note that these may be compared to Canadian norms, which could differ from a U.S. perspective.
Executive Planet Business Culture Guides Brief culture guides for about 40 countries include tips on making appointments, business dress, conversation, gifts, negotiating, public behaviour standards, etc.
Geert Hofstede Cultural Dimensions Professor Hofstede has scored countries for indicators of cultural differences. His scores compare countries for cultural factors such as individualism, masculinity, tolerance for uncertainty, long-term orientation, and "the extent to which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions . . . accept and expect that power is distributed unequally." The indexes are described in more detail below the charts for each country. You can also create charts at the site that compare your home country to another country.
Global Negotiation Resources: 50 Countries This site has country information from the book Negotiating International Business by Lothar Katz. "They are 5-10 pages long and cover the following topics: Introduction, Relationships and Respect, Communication, Initial Contact & Meetings, Negotiation, Agreements and Contracts, Women in Business, Other Important Things to Know."
Global Smarts This eBook is subtitled "The Art of Communicating and Deal Making Anywhere in the World." It offers many tips on intercultural communication. The information is not presented by country. However, you can use the Books24x7 search feature to search for a specific country within this book.
Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands This reference book at the EMU Library provides cultural overviews, behavior styles, negotiating techniques, protocol, and business practices for sixty countries. One unique feature is a section on value systems that discusses decision making, sources of anxiety reduction, and issues of equality/inequality.

Corporate Affiliations This directory is useful for finding the international subsidiaries of both U.S. and international corporations. You can do sophisticated searches to find companies by geography (country or city/state), industry (SIC or NAICS), sales, # of employees, brand, type of company (public, private, international), and more. It lists a company's divisions and subsidiaries, and specifies their relationships within a corporation. A large number of corporate executives are listed for each corporation-- not just the top officers. Most companies included have over $10 million in annual revenue ($50 million for international firms), or over 300 employees.

Hoover's Company Profiles Brief profiles of international companies include an overview, executives, locations, products/operations, competitors, a few financial numbers, and in some cases a brief company history.

International Directory of Company Histories This ever-expanding set of books offers detailed company histories for over 6750 of the world’s largest and most influential companies. Entries provide information on founders, expansions, losses, labor/management actions, principal divisions, subsidiaries, and competitors. Many of the essays can be found in Business and Company Resource Center--search for the company then look under the "Histories" tab. Only the paper edition has all the essays--check the cumulative company index in the most recent volume (the series currently stands at 69 volumes) to locate entries for companies of interest. Some of the entries (only a few of the volumes) are available free at the Reference for Business web site.

Kompass This free directory on the Web includes 1.9 million companies in 75 countries. Free search capabilities include searches by product/service, company name, trade name, or executive. All searches can be limited by world region or a specific country. Free information is usually just address and phone number, but sometimes also a business description, executives, or product and services.
Largest Transnational Corporations UNCTAD "UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) ranks the largest non-financial TNCs by their foreign assets and presents data on assets, sales and employment in three separate lists: the 100 largest worldwide, the largest 100 from developing countries, and the largest 10 from the economies in transition of Eastern Europe and the CIS." There is a separate ranking for financial firms. Interesting infomation on the multinational companies includes statistics on foreign assets, sales, employees, and affiliates for each firm.
Thomas Global Register "Thomas Global Register is a directory of 500,000 manufacturers and distributors from 26 countries, classified by 10,500 products and services categories." There are also other Thomas sites providing manufacturing directories for Brazil, Mexico, and Japan.
Site is free to all users, but requires registration to set up an account.

ABI/Inform Global ABI/INFORM Global indexes over 2000 journals, magazines, trade publications, and newspapers covering topics in business and economics. Many articles are available full-text. ABI/INFORM is a multipurpose database which can be used to find scholarly articles, general business articles, and articles on specific companies or industries. It’s excellent search interface can save time in finding relevant materials.

Euromonitor International Article Archive This is a small archive of free international market related articles by a publisher of international market research. Although you can search by keyword, the most effective approach might be to just choose your country or industry category.
Brief articles are free. Full reports elsewhere on the site are too expensive for students.
Factiva This database from Dow Jones and Reuters includes very recent newswires and full text articles from business periodicals, trade journals, and the Wall Street Journal. Reuters newswires from hundreds of worldwide offices make Factiva a useful source for international news from emerging markets.

Demographic Yearbook The UN publishes country population statistics in the Demographic Yearbook. This site offers PDF versions of tables from the current and previous yearbooks.
Corruption Indexes Transparency International Transparency International does regular surveys to measure levels of corruption in countries. These include the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), Global Corruption Barometer (GCB), and Bribe Payers Index (BPI).
Euromoney Country Risk Rankings Euromoney magazine publishes an analysis of country risk in March and September issues. Countries are analyzed and ranked using political, economic, and financial factors.

Global Competitiveness Report A yearly assessment by the World Economic Forum of the "competitive condition of economies worldwide." The report is available for download in PDF. There are also links to competitiveness profiles for 100 individual countries.
Index of Economic Freedom Heritage Foundation & Wall Street Journal Includes assessments by the Heritage Foundation of business freedom, trade freedom, fiscal freedom, government size, monetary freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom, property rights, freedom from corruption, and labor freedom. Note: Some prominent economists, such as Jeffrey Sachs, have criticized the Heritage Foundation's conclusions from this index. Consider the possibility of ideological bias in using this information.
International Data Base (IDB) Census Bureau Offers "statistical tables of demographic and socioeconomic data for 227 countries and areas of the world." Also, offers graphs, ranking of countries by population, and ability to download data into spreadsheets.
International Telecommunication Union Statistics The ITU offers some free statistics on the web, including telephone, cellular, internet, and broadband statistics by country and region. Statistics are more up-to-date than those from most IGO's.
International Trade Administration The U.S. International Trade Administration site has data on U.S. merchandise exports, imports, and trade balances. The site is not well organized, so it may take some time to find information.
International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics This reference book published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization offers manufacturing industry sector data, which has been adjusted to allow for cross country comparisons.

Laborsta International statistics on labor and consumer prices from the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Market Potential Indicators These indicators developed by the MSU-CIBER rank “the market potential of 24 countries identified as "Emerging Markets"”, using factors such as market size, growth, consumption capacity, country risk, and more.
NationMaster "NationMaster compiles statistics from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, World Resources Institute, UNESCO, UNICEF and OECD." You can use Nationmaster to display graphs of the statistical information. All statistics/charts include a link to the original source.
OECD Statistics Portal The OECD Statistics Portal offers numerous statistics and reports on the 30 OECD countries (USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Iceland, and many European countries.)
Tip: The "Statistics" link in the left margin or the "Frequently Requested Statistics" link in the right margin may lead you to interesting statistics.
Statistical Abstract of the United States Two sections located near the end of the Statistical Abstract contain statistics relevant to international business. Section 28: Foreign Commerce and Aid offers numerous statistics related to international trade. Section 30: Comparative International Statistics contains useful demographic, economic, and industry statistics for many countries. Footnotes to the statistical tables can direct you to a more complete government report or Web site.

UN Social Indicators Site offers UN statistics by country on demographic topics related to health, education, income, urban/rural mix, etc.
World Development Indicators Tables give data for many countries on population demographics, economics, development, investment, the environment, etc. The World Bank site offers only a few of the tables. The full set of tables is available in the reference book at the library.

World Economic Outlook Reports "The World Economic Outlook presents the IMF staff's analysis and projections of economic developments at the global level, in major country groups (classified by region, stage of development, etc.), and in many individual countries. It focuses on major economic policy issues as well as on the analysis of economic developments and prospects." The statistical appendix includes data and projections of per capita GDP growth and inflation indicators.
