Google Scholar Google Scholar searches "peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations." The results are ranked by relevance (including how often the article has been cited). You can also retrieve a list of articles that have cited the source. Google has worked with libraries so that you can use EMU Findtext to locate the full text.

Note: When using it in Google Scholar, EMU Findtext+ does not come up in a new window. After using Findtext+ use the browser's back button to return to the list of results. Also note that the EMU Findtext link sometimes appears under the result listing and sometimes to the right of it.
You must link to Google Scholar from the EMU Library site to get the EMU Findtext+ feature.
What is Findtext+ ?

Accounting & Tax Indexes articles on accounting, auditing, taxation, and financial management from over 400 journals and trade periodicals. Excellent subject headings provide for indexing articles by specific Internal Revenue Code sections and specific accounting standards, as well as many detailed accounting terms. Many articles are available full-text.
Access from off campus with My.Emich login
comAbstracts CIOS Sometimes useful for Business Communication or HR courses, comAbstracts indexes articles and books in the communication field.

techXtra For Engineering, Mathematics, and Computing topics you can use techXtra to search multiple free databases at once. "Find articles, key websites, books, the latest industry news, job announcements, ejournals, eprints, technical reports, the latest research, thesis & dissertations and more!" Could be useful for CIS, POMS, and SCM courses.
Search engine is free, but it may point to content that isn't free on the web. You may then be able to locate articles and books using the Periodicals Locator or EMU Library Catalog (see Obtaining the Articles below).
TRANweb Northwestern University Library produces "a web based periodical index of transportation and law enforcement articles and conference proceedings". This includes supply chain and logistics topics. You can use this to identify articles and then EMU Library may have the fulltext.
After identifying an article in TRANweb, use the EMU Library Periodicals Locator to search for full text.
Web of Science (Social Sciences Citation Index & Science Citation Index) This multi-disciplinary social science database includes academic business articles published from 1995 on. A unique feature of this database is the ability to search for articles that have cited a specific article (cited reference search).

Supports Boolean searches using AND, OR, NOT and nesting with parenthesis.
Truncation symbol is * (example: audit*).
Wildcard symbol is ? for one character or $ for 0-1 character.
For proximity use SAME (words must appear in same field) Example: shareholder SAME rights.

  Business News Articles
These databases have mostly content from trade periodicals, business magazines, and newspapers. They may include a few scholarly publications.
Factiva Factiva is a fabulous database for business news as it includes over 8000 full text sources. It includes all editions of the Wall Street Journal and the Dow Jones newswires, thousands of newpapers from all over the world, numerous industry trade periodicals, and more.

Because it searches the full text of articles, you may sometimes retrieve too many articles. If this is the case, from the results screen try changing the "sort by" from publication date to relevance.

Another search technique is to require that a word or phrase appear multiple times in an article.
Example: atleast5(pulte homes)
This search will retrieve only articles where the phrase pulte homes appears at least 5 times (you can use any number up to 50)

Supports Boolean searches using AND, OR, NOT and nesting with parenthesis.
Truncation symbol is * (example: audit*).
Wildcard symbol for single character is ? (example: wom?n).
For proximity use near and a number (Example: market near4 share), to specify word order use adj and a number (Example: Franklin adj2 Roosevelt), or use same to require words be in the same paragraph (Example: computers same supply chain
For more details on Factiva search techniques, download the handout Top Ten Reasons to Love Factiva.

  Obtaining the Articles
Most articles can be obtained via the EMU Library. Some articles will be available electronically, some will be in paper or microform at the library, and some can be obtained for you via interlibrary loan. Infrequently, an article can also be found for free on the World Wide Web.

EMU Findtext+ Many of the databases provide full text articles. When the article is not full text in the database you are using, you can check to see if the text is available via a different database, an electronic journal subscription, or at the library.

Click on the EMU FindText+ link found in the article record.
This will trigger a pop-up window with links to various options, such as:

Periodicals Locator Use the Periodicals Locator when you know the title of the journal or periodical you want to find. The Periodicals Locator will link you to sources for full text articles. This could be online sources or information on paper copies at the Library.

Tips:
1. Watch for date coverage in the listings. You may need to link to a particular database for the journal year you need.
2. Ignore the boxes and just hit the red GO by the source you choose.

Interlibrary Loan
(ILLiad System)
When EMU does not own the journal you need (in paper, microform, or electronically), you can request that library staff obtain a copy for you from another library. After you have set up an ILLiad account, you can easily request an article via a quick online form (FindText+ may even fill in some form fields for you! - Careful, you will still have to fill in some yourself). It can take a week or two to obtain the article.
EMU Library Catalog Not all the accessible periodicals are in the EMU catalog--the catalog has records for hard copy periodicals at the library and some electronic subscriptions. The catalog does not include all periodicals available through databases. For this reason, the Periodicals Locator above may be a better place to search and the periodicals locator will send you to the Library catalog record when the library has paper copies of a journal.

A catalog record for a periodical title will often list multiple locations. Look for the date of the issue you need. Older issues may be on microform or in the ARC (Automated Retrieval Collection). You can view a short video on How to Request Items from Storage.

  Other Electronic Journal Collections
The library subscribes to several electronic journal collections. It usually works better to search the Major Indexes listed above and then use FindText+ to retrieve articles from the electronic journal collections. However, sometimes you may wish to search the contents of these directly.

Using some of the electronic journal collection sites for searching subjects can be confusing. The search will find citations or abstracts for all of the publisher's journals, but will give you access to full text only for those journals EMU library subscribes to.

JSTOR JSTOR includes many important journal titles for Business. A strength of JSTOR is that the electronic journal usually starts with volume one. Very recent years are often not available due to copyright restrictions from the publisher. All JSTOR full text is available to EMU users.

Directory of Open Access Journals "This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals." Open access journals "use a funding model that does not charge readers or their institutions for access." You have the right to "read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles." Although many of these journals are new, all of them "exercise quality control on submitted papers through an editor, editorial board and/or a peer-review system" and many are published by respected entities such as scholarly societies, universities, research institutes, and intergovernmental organizations. More than 500 of these journals can be searched to find individual articles by title, author, and keyword.

  Finding Books
EMU Library Catalog The EMU Library Catalog can be used to find books, videos, and electronic books. You can view a very short web video on how to Do a Basic Search in the Catalog.

After you've found a book you want in the EMU Library Catalog, you'll need to find the book in the library. For help you can:

You need to show a current student ID to check out books.
Access electronic books from off campus with my.emich login.
Books24X7 You can explore a treasure trove of online business and technical books in Books24x7. These books are also listed in the EMU Catalog. At the Books24x7 site you can do keyword searches of the book contents. Note: You can read the entire book online section by section, but you aren't able to print the book out.
My.Emich login is required to access.
Google Books Google is digitizing the book holdings of many major research libraries. Google Books is easy to use and may help you find additional books on your subject. When the book is not in copyright (older book or government document) you will be able to view 100% of the book; when the book is copyrighted (most recent books) you will be able to view only a small portion of the book. However, this can help you identify books which may be in the EMU Library collection or available via interlibrary loan.
Interlibrary Loan ILL When the EMU Library doesn't own a book you need, you can request that library staff try to borrow the book for you from another library. There are two ways to make an ILL request: via MeLCat or via Illiad. Try MeLCAT first as MeLCat is usually faster. You can sometimes obtain the book in about a week. MeLCat allows you to search for your book, see which participating Michigan libraries have the book, and request the book online. If your book isn't in the MeLCat database, use the ILLiad system to request the book. With ILLiad you can fill out an online form to request the book and EMU Library staff will look for a library that has it. For more details, see the links for ILL policies and the ILL FAQ.
EMU users only.
Others can get similar services through their university or public library.

Zimmerman's Research Guide This "Online Encyclopedia for Legal Researchers" created by librarian Andrew Zimmerman provides an easy way to "pick the brain" of an experienced librarian. It is essentially an alphabetical index of legal and business topics. Click on a topic to find Andrew's advice on sources for this topic. He mentions free web sites, reference books, and subscription database services. To access subscription databases provided by the EMU Library, you must use the link from the EMU Library Databases page rather than the link from Zimmerman's pages. EMU does not subscribe to all the sources listed in Zimmerman's guide, such as Dialog, OneSource, etc. Since this is a guide written for librarians at businesses, the database contents may vary from the content in our academic subscriptions. Also since this is written for librarians, the advice may not fully explain things at a student level--remember that you can always ask an EMU librarian for help.
