		The Annual Report to Shareholders (ARS) is a great place to start research on a public company. In addition to the balance sheet, the ARS will contain a letter to shareholders and a management report. These often contain information on current challenges and future directions of the company. Often you can find a copy of the ARS on the company's web site. Additional info can be found in SEC filings and other investment info sources--see Financial Markets and Services guide.
AnnualReports.com		At AnnualReports.com you can find PDF files of current annual reports for a large number of public companies. Includes reports from some international exchanges. Free. No registration. Quick and easy.
IRIN's Annual Report Center		This site is useful because in addition to current reports, it often has some historical reports. Also, you can do full text keyword searches of the report collection. (Want to find companies who mentioned Enron in their annual report?) Free. No registration.
Annual Reports Service via Briefing.com		You can download PDF Annual Reports for many companies from this site. You have to register at the site, but after registering you get immediate access to the report.
European Annual Reports Service via Yahoo UK & Ireland		This site offers PDF versions of Annual Reports for many European companies in several countries (not just the U.K. and Ireland). Ward’s Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies		In addition to standard directory information and a geographical index, Ward’s offers detailed rankings of companies. Rankings include companies ranked by sales within 4-digit SIC or within 6-digit NAICS, State Rankings by sales within 4-digit SIC, and other special rankings. Reference HG 4057 .A58x 2008
Thomas Register		This extensive Web directory of North American industrial firms can be searched by product or service, company name, or brand name. Brief directory information often includes the company Web site and sometimes includes a full online product catalog. Site is free to all users, but requires registration to set up an account.
Lycos Yellow Pages		Search by name or by a combination of business category and U.S. city. Site includes innovative searches, such as a search that shows businesses on a map or a search for businesses within a specified distance from an address.
Standard & Poor’s Register of Corporations Directors and Executives		A unique feature of the Register is brief biographical information for those individuals listed as executives and directors of the large companies covered by this directory. Indexes by six digit NAICS, state, and personal name. As of Fall 2005, the EMU library subscribes only to the electronic edition found in S&P NetAdvantage
American Wholesalers and Distributors Directory		Use this directory in the library to search for wholesalers or distributors by product line, SIC code, state/city, or company name. Information on companies sometimes includes number of employees, estimated annual sales volume, and principal officers. Library 1st floor Reference HF5421 .A615
America’s Corporate Families		This directory of U.S. subsidiaries includes firms too small to be included in Corporate Affiliations. SAubscription has been cancelled. Latest directory is from 2007. Reference HG 4057 .A147
BusinessWeek Company Insight Center		This free database on the web has profiles of both public and private companies (U.S. and international). For public companies, there can be up to 33 pages of data including: a description of the company, recent stock quotes and financial data, historical stock quotes, financial statements, ratios, SEC filings, top executives and board members (with background, compensation, and board relationships), insider and institutional ownership, transactions (private placement, mergers/acquisitions, bankruptcy, buyback), options data, links to the company stock on other exchanges, and recent news stories. Information on private companies is more limited but can include a brief description, key executives, and brief news developments. There is sometimes a list of "similar companies" to the private company--this could lead you to identify competitors, but the companies are not always competitors (or very similar). Since much of the data comes from BusinessWeek and Standard & Poor's, it is generally pretty high quality information. Tips: Search by ticker symbol works best. Searching by company name will bring up a long list that includes variants of the company on other exchanges, as well as many irrelevant results. If searching for a private company, choose the Private Company tab before searching.
Consultants and Consulting Organizations Directory		It can be especially difficult to find information on consulting firms. This book at the EMU Library can be helpful. Entries for consulting firms include: address, web site, number of staff, names of executives, description of activities, and geographic area served. Some entries will include an estimate of annual consulting revenues, but this information is not always available. Some entries also include branch information, listings of workshops, or computer/special services. Listings are arranged by broad consulting categories. Directory of Service Companies		Directory of Service Companies includes public and private companies with 50+ employees that are primarily involved in services such as hotels, repair services, motion pictures, recreation, accounting, engineering, health, legal, and social services. Forbes America's Largest Private Companies		Forbes provides brief profiles of over 300 of the largest U.S. private companies. Profiles include revenues, number of employess, address, web site, brief description, top officers, brand names. The list can be sorted by name, rank, state, industry, revenue, or number of employees.
MacRAE's Blue Book		Use this directory to search by product to find manufacturers of industrial products and components. Or search for an industrial company to find directory info, certifications, and products. Free directory on web
National Minority and Woman-Owned Business Directory		This directory available at the EMU Library can be used to identify businesses that are at least 51% owned by minorities. Entries are arranged by type of company, then state. There is also an index by company name. Entries include address information, lines of business, # of employees, sales, certification information, and codes for type of minority owner. (See fly page for code explanations.) Reuters Company Profiles		Includes over 9000 public company profiles, including international companies. Profiles include detailed company descriptions (often several pages long); key numbers (employees, revenue, market cap, ...); brief bios of management and directors (sometimes including compensation); competitors; benchmarks; and detailed financials (including annual and quarterly income statements, cash flow statements, and balance sheets.)

ABI/Inform		You may use ABI/Inform to find rankings published in business periodicals. Use the advanced search function with keywords for your industry, product, company, or brand in combination with the term “rankings” in the subject field. Entrepreneur Magazine's 100 Fastest Growing Businesses in America		Entrepreneur's listing of hot companies includes brief info on each company, the company's web address, the initial investment amount, a current sales figure, and the company's "success secret."
Forbes Lists		Forbes magazine regularly publishes a number of lists and rankings, including Largest Private Companies, World's 2,000 Largest Companies, 200 Best Small Companies, 400 Best Big Companies, Fastest-Growing Techs, Asia's Best Under A Billion, Asia's Fabulous 50 Companies, Global High Performers, 400 Richest Americans, and more. The lists are on the Forbes web site. To find associated articles use full text of Forbes via library databases.
Fortune 500 and other Fortune lists		Fortune compiles an annual list of America's largest corporations. There are also links to related lists such as Fortune 1000 companies by state, America's Most Admired Companies, 100 Best Companies to Work For, etc.
NewsWeek's Green Ratings		Environmental ranking of America's 500 largest corporations looks at factors such as pollutants and greenhouse gas emmissions, energy use, renewable energy, recycling, regulatory infractions, lawsuits, and policies (including carbon neutral policies). Also, includes rankings by industry sector.

		In addition to the sources below, you can: Do a keyword search in a Web search engine to possibly find a Corporate Social Responsibility Report. Search for articles about the company and specific issues in the databases listed in the next section.
100 Best Corporate Citizens CRO Magazine		The magazine CRO: Corporate Responsibility Officer (formerly Business Ethics magazine) publishes a yearly ranking of U.S. public companies they rate highly on corporate citizenship.
2009 World’s Most Ethical Companies		Ranking by Ethisphere magazine.
Corporate Responsibility Reports CRO Magazine		This gives links to over 100 social responsibility reports on the web. Note CorporateRegister.com (listed below) has a much larger number of reports but requires free registration.
CorporateRegister.com		This site aspires to be a "comprehensive directory of corporate non-financial (environment/social/sustainability/CSR) reports. Established as a free service by Next Step Consulting in 1998, the site aims to provide access to all current reports, as well as developing an archive of all reports published since 1990." You must register and set up a password to use the site, but the site is free. It's easy to search by company name and you can also do an advanced search to find reports using criteria such as business sector, country, year published, and report type. Free, but registration required.
CSR Wire Corporate Social Responsibility Newswire Service		This is an easy source for getting the "company side" of the story. You can do keyword searches of a company name to find press releases from the company about their socially responsible actions such as community programs, charitable giving, awards, environmental efforts, etc. You might also be able to search on this site for reports such as a Corporate Social Responsibility Report, Corporate Environmental Report, or other such report.
Responsible Shopper		The free database at this site has profiles of 350+ companies that describe how the company has been criticized and/or praised on social responsibility topics related to the environment, corporate ethics, labor issues, discrimination/diversity, corporate welfare, unfair competition, antitrust, safety, human rights, executive compensation, privacy, charitable giving, community involvement, legal disputes, etc.

		Tip on Finding Full Text Articles: Many of the databases below provide full text articles. When the article is not full text in the database you are using, you can easily check to see if the text is available via an electronic journal subscription, a different database, or at the library. Click on the EMU FindText+ link found in the article record. This will open a new window with links to other possible sources for the article.
ABI/INFORM Global		ABI/INFORM Global indexes over 2000 journals, magazines, trade publications, and newspapers covering topics in business and economics. Many articles are available full-text. ABI/INFORM is a multipurpose database which can be used to find scholarly articles, general business articles, and articles on specific companies or industries. Foundation Center 990 Finder		This search can be used to find Form 990s and Form 990-PF's (for private foundations). Form 990 is an IRS form that may include financial information. You can search here by organization name, state, zip code, and/or fiscal year. There are also helpful links to sites that explain how to read information in a FORM 990.

GuideStar		Search for nonprofits by keyword, name, city, or state. Free information may include address, web site link, mission & programs, and Form 990 for the most recent years. Nonprofit Organizations Lookup		This directory on the Web has IRS information on nonprofits. You can look up nonprofits by name, tax ID, or zip code. Information on the organization will vary; but for those that file a FORM 990 you may get some dollar figures on assets and income. A wide array of nonprofits are included such as charities, foundations, private colleges, unions, arts organizations, fraternities & sororities, chambers of commerce, churches, professional associations, athletic clubs, service clubs, and social clubs. You get a limited number of free look-ups per day.
Media Transparency		This site includes information from 990's for a subset of nonprofits: conservative foundations and organizations that recieve grants from those foundations. The purpose of the site is to shed light on political motivations behind the funding of think tanks and other organizations. Although this site covers a smaller number of organizations than Guidestar or the Nonprofit Organizations Lookup, it does contain additional details on those organizations covered. Tip: You'll find organizations under the links for both funders and recipients.

Government Agencies The company you are researching may be required to report information to national, state or local regulatory agencies and it may be public information. Trade Associations There is a trade association for most types of businesses in the U.S. If your company is a member of an association, information on them may be included in association publications or on their Web site. To find associations see Business and Industry Associations in the Industry Research guide. Competitors If you phrase your questions carefully, a competitor may give you valuable information. For example, asking questions about the industry, then zeroing in on two or three competitors of the company you are interviewing might lead your source to comment on the size, strength or strategy of your target company. Suppliers Suppliers and wholesalers are sometimes willing to provide size of shipments or other comparative information on the companies they serve. Labor Unions If there is an organized labor union in the company you are researching, the union may provide you with information on the number of employees and the type of work performed. Local Public Libraries or Newspapers These local institutions often maintain clipping files or other publications that are not widely available outside of their region. The Company Itself In some cases, a skillful, knowledgeable interviewer can call a company directly and successfully learn a great deal about its operations. Your reception may be warm and cooperative, or you may be immediately dismissed. This kind of call may be necessary when you have exhausted all other sources of information. Again, reasonable, well-informed questions will be most productive. Corporate Archives Serious researchers wanting to look at historical materials relating to a company or organization may be able to access materials at a corporate archive. You may be able to identify an appropriate archive using the free online Directory of Corporate Archives in the United States and Canada which is maintained by the Business Archives Section of the Society of American Archivists.
