  Exploring Career Preferences
EMU Career Services Center The Career Services Center at 200 McKenny Hall can administer more detailed tests than the ones listed below and provide other useful services. Some career interest tests are available online.

Career Interests Game A simple exercise that allows you to match your preferences, skills, and personality to six career type groups (based on research by John Holland). Careers are listed for each group and the career titles are linked to the Occupational Outlook Handbook description for each career. The EMU Career Resource Center can administer a more detailed Holland test.
Cognitive Style Inventory Scroll down the page for a free quick inventory for determining your Myers-Briggs personality type. Links to a site with information on the sixteen types, including career lists. The EMU Career Resource Center can administer a better Myers-Briggs test. (Business students can make an appointment with Lorraine Smith at the COB Satellite Office, Career Services Center.)

Occupational Outlook Handbook This standard source by the U.S. Dept. of Labor offers details on numerous careers, including the nature of the work, working conditions, earnings, qualifications needed, expectations of job growth, number of openings, and sources of additional information. Explore the suggested Web sites for specific occupations.

Career TV Career TV has many short videos with job hunting tips on interviewing, resume & cover letter preparation, dress for success, job fair strategy, etc. There are also many recruitment videos abut specific companies, which may give you useful insight on the corporate culture.
Susan Ireland Resumes This Web site, recommended by the EMU Career Center, offers advice on resumes, electronic resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, interviewing, and salary negotiation.

  Employee Satisfaction Rankings
Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For Fortune magazine does an "annual ranking of companies that rank high with employees." There is brief information on "what makes it so great for each company." Also statistics on number of employees, percent of minority employees, percent of women employees, job growth, number of applicants per year, percent voluntary turnover, and salary of most common jobs. Besides the top 100 list, the site has lists for best benefits and top-paying companies.
Best Places to Work in the Federal Government This site presents a ranking that "rates the performance of agencies and specialized subagencies related to employee satisfaction."
Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America "This joint endeavor of the Great Place to Work® Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) provides an opportunity for small-sized companies (50-250 employees) and medium-sized companies (251-999 employees) to compete for the honor of being named one of the Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America".
Business Week's Best Places to Launch a Career Business Week used combined three different methods to rank companies as the most desirable employers for recent graduates.
AARP's Best Employers for Workers over 50 This annual program recognizes companies with "best practices and policies for valuing the mature worker."
Best Work Places For Commuters "Best Workplaces for Commuters is an innovative, voluntary business-government program that distinguishes and provides national recognition to employers offering outstanding commuter benefits such as free or low cost bus passes, strong telework programs, carpooling matching and vanpool subsidies."
ComputerWorld's Best Places to Work in IT "Computerworld conducts an annual survey to identify the 100 best places to work for IT professionals." This survey includes only large companies with at least 75 IT professionals.
Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Best Places to Work This site offers lists "of the top companies that support equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) employees" by industry. Includes related information on policies, benefits, diversity training, etc.
Latina Style 50 Latina Style magazine surveys corporations and ranks them using a number of criteria related to "sensitivity to hispanic professional women."
Working Mother 100 Best Companies This lists ranks best companies for "innovative time-off and maternity leave policies, work/life flexibility and child-care programs." Also, linked from this page are Best Companies: Women of Color and Working Mother Best Small Companies.
